Healthcare structures

Where can you work in health and care?

The health and care system is made up of multiple sectors under the Kent and Medway Integrated Care System (ICS). No matter where you live in Kent and Medway, there will be a health or care organisation near you.

Kent and Medway is made up of four Health and Care Partnership (HaCP) areas. These are:

East Kent

West Kentย

Medway and Swale

Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley

Within these Health and Care Partnerships, or HaCPs, are primary care networks (PCNs), community services, acute (main) hospitals and care providers.ย

Primary care networks

There are currently 41 primary care networks in Kent and Medway (2023), with a total of 192 GP practices. Primary care networks, or PCNโ€™s, are made up of general practice, community pharmacy, dental care and optometry or eye health.

Secondary care

There are seven leading healthcare trusts in Kent and Medway. These are:

  • Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust
  • East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust
  • Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust
  • Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust
  • Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust
  • Medway NHS Foundation Trust
  • Medway Community Hospital

Secondary care usually takes place in a hospital and consists of planned and elective care, urgent and emergency care and mental health care.

Community health

Community health services cover a wide range of services and provide care for people from birth to the end of their life, and usually in peopleโ€™s homes, including care homes. You may have had a health visitor come to your home after the birth of a child, or had a district nurse come to support an elderly relative. This is a good choice if you prefer to be out and about, meeting people and supporting your local community.

The care sector

The care sector is separate to the NHS, but it is a very important part of the health and care pathway. In Kent and Medway, social care is managed through the two councils, Kent County Council and Medway Council. There are hundreds of jobs available in social care across many areas, with care workers only being one of these.

Tertiary care

Tertiary care cover specialist services such as neurosurgery, transplants, plastic surgery and secure forensic mental health services.

Whatever your preference; working directly with patients in a clinical role, a porter or customer service, in hospitals, in the ambulance care team, administration team, digital team, in the community or volunteering, there are hundreds of opportunities for you to not only enter into a health or care role, but progress to the career of your dreams.
